St Andrew’s, Crosby Garrett Memorial Service – for those who died during construction of the line
Please join us at 4pm Sunday 21 April 2024 at St Andrew’s, Crosby Garrett for a short service, procession to the railway viaduct and refreshments in the United Chapel.
If you never caught the train, or never had to meet anyone from the train, the Settle-Carlisle Railway could appear to be an entity separated from our landscape. Of course the reality is that the railway is very much part of our outlook and environment. Whether we use it or not we all benefit from its presence. Certainly no one can escape the impression it leaves on our landscape and heritage.
Part of this heritage is remembering the people who built the line – who literally gave their bodies for its construction. It is very fitting that in the churchyards of St Mary’s Mallerstang and St Andrew’s, Crosby Garrett there are memorials to those who died during the construction of the line.
Please join us at 4pm Sunday 21 April 2024 at St Andrew’s, Crosby Garrett for a short service, procession to the railway viaduct and refreshments in the United Chapel. Our preacher will be the Reverend Stephen Radford. Stephen has worked in the railway industry, and maintains more than a passing interest in things locomotive. I am delighted that we have such a well qualified preacher. We will remember the past and celebrate the present significance of the railway.
