Restoring the past for the future
Many of you will know the work of the Settle Carlisle Trust – taking care of several of the unique buildings along the line. Restoring and renovating where needing and bringing new purpose to those that can no longer function as they used to. The new ventures generate income which is fed back into our work and so the virtuous circle continues.
Along the way we encounter lots of challenges and even some of the seemingly ‘smallest’ jobs can take hours of time and effort. Much of this work is done by volunteers and here is one beautiful example from the station holiday cottage at Dent.
One of the original Burlington cast iron toilet cisterns had developed a leak through the shell. The cistern was removed and taken to our volunteer’s own workshop for restoration.
Phil, who masterminds much of the restoration work, scraped all surface rust off, treated with rust prevention and three coats of bitumen paint inside, repaired the leak, added two coats of undercoat, a new float valve and then took it back up to Dent and refitted it.
The photos show the progress of the work and the beautifully finished article.
