Built in 1875, the station at Kirkby Stephen was restored in 2005. Platform Cottage, at the North end of the station building, is a ground floor 2-person luxurious apartment. Refurbished in 2023 it offers excellent self-catering accommodation in the beautiful and un-spoilt Upper Eden Valley of Cumbria. This cottage can be let together with the adjoining first floor Station Cottage if there are 4 of you.
This is a working station on a mainline railway and with this in mind, we regret that Platform Cottage is not suitable for children under the age of 7.

The house is located at Kirkby Stephen station. The spectacular valley of Mallerstang and Wild Boar Fell are right on your doorstep, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks are in easy reach as is Hadrian’s Wall to the north.
The best way to arrive is by rail using the Leeds-Skipton-Settle-Kirkby Stephen-Appleby-Carlisle train service. It can also be easily reached by car via junction 38 of the M6 or via Brough on the A66 from Penrith on the M6 or Scotch Corner on the A1.
Kirkby Stephen is the nearest town, 1½ miles away, with a range of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants . Asda Home Delivery service can take orders for after you arrive.
The 564 bus service links Kirkby Stephen town with the station, Sedbergh, Oxenholme station and Kendal. On Wednesday’s there is a heritage bus service from the station forecourt to Barnard Castle, and on Tuesdays in Summer to Hawes too. A hard-surface footpath provides an all-weather pedestrian route between the town and the station.
The local area is rich in landscapes, settlements, heritage and attractions.
Kirkby Stephen is a small town nestled at the top of the beautiful Eden Valley. It has a range of small shops, including antiques and collectable shops, galleries, grocers, bakers, florest, a supermarket and post office.
For active visitors, there are walks in every direction including Nine Standards Rigg, Wild Board Fell and the Poetry Path. Include a trip to the spectacular cascade of Cautley Spout waterfall in the Howgill Fells, the highest waterfall in England, and for those with a bent to nature try the stunning and wonderfully varied Smardale Gill nature reserve. A little further afield the National Trust’s Acorn bank property is well worth a visit with some fantastic gardens and a range of activities and events.
In additon to the local attractions, you have fantastic train access to Carlisle and all the way to Leeds, featuring great villages, towns and stations along the way, direct from your door. From a railway perspective there are gems in every direction, the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct, Blea Moor tunnel, and the Blea Moor signal box and the Stainmore Railway Company at Kirkby Stephen East station.
The house and garden are adjacent to the station platform . Kirkby Stephen is a quiet station, but on dates when steam trains pass it can be busy. The last passenger train is around 9pm. A few freight trains do pass through day and night time, mostly during weekdays but rarely between 9pm and 5am.
Unfortunately pets are not allowed at this cottage.

Smoking is prohibited anywhere in the cottage or station.
Children under the age of 7 are not allowed given the proximity to the platform and line. For older children please take care and ensure supervision when outside the cottage.
A £75 non-returnable deposit will be required to secure your booking. Prices vary seasonally and you can choose from the following durations:
7 (or 14) nights (Friday – Friday or Monday – Monday)
Long Weekend Breaks of 3 nights (Friday – Monday)
Mid-week Breaks of 4 nights (Monday – Friday)
You are welcome to arrive at any time after 3pm on the first day of your booking. On your final day you are requested to leave by 10am to allow us time to prepare the cottage for the next guests.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION PRE-BOOKING
The cottages are part of the main station building and are on the platform. Although a quiet station, members of the public visit the station throughout the day, the last passenger train is around 8pm. Freight trains pass through day and night time mostly during weekdays. Kirkby Stephen Station is a mile and a half out of the town itself, and sits on a hillside overlooking the fells and Upper Eden Valley.
