The Settle and Carlisle line is unique among British railway lines as its Victorian architecture remains complete and intact. The line has a rich legacy of historical fact and folklore, and includes a wide range of original buildings and structures.

In 1991 the importance of this heritage was reflected in the designation of a conservation area throughout the 78 mile length of the line from Carlisle to Hellifield. The only railway line in Great Britain to be accorded such status. The Settle & Carlisle Railway Trust was established in 1990.

The Trust is one of the four organisations that makes up the ‘S&C family’. The other family members are:

S&C Railway properties Ltd, a subsidiary of the Trust, which looks after the stations we lease and other properties. It runs our holiday lettings business.

Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line (FoSCL). There are over 3000 members who support the line in many ways. FoSCL publishes the Journal, an invaluable source of information.
S&C Development Company (DevCo). Our Community Rail Partnership which promotes the line, runs on-train refreshment trollies and arranges tours.

THE SETTLE - CARLISLE RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

The Development Company is responsible for promoting and supporting the scheduled services on the line and encouraging appropriate sustainable development throughout the line corridor. The Company operate the refreshment trolley service available on most of the trains on the line.

FRIENDS OF THE SETTLE - CARLISLE LINE

The Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line (FoSCL) was formed in 1981 to fight the proposed closure of the line. Following its success with the reprieve in 1989 FoSCL has grown as a subscription organisation with around 3,500 members, the largest rail user group in the UK. FoSCL campaigns for the maintenance and improvement of services and facilities along the line.

NETWORK RAIL

Owns and maintains the infrastructure (track, signalling, bridges etc.) for the Train Operating and Freight Companies to operate their services on.

Currently hold the Franchise to operate services between Leeds and Carlisle. As Station Facility Owner, Northern is responsible for operating train services, cleaning and maintenance of the stations and publicity.

THE RAILWAY HERITAGE TRUST

Is an independent company , funded by Network Rail and the Highways Agency Historical Railways Estate, whose role is to support through grants the conservation and restoration of historic railway buildings and structures. It also acts as an advisory body on the conservation of the country’s railway heritage.
